West Bengal Budget: The BJP government formed for the first time in Bengal has presented its first budget. CM Suvendur Adhikari’s Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta has made announcements for everyone from employees to youth.

A total budget of Rs 4,38,775.29 crore (net) was presented for the financial year 2026-2027, in which several infrastructure projects and new schemes have been announced. State Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta presented the budget of the state’s first BJP government in the Assembly.

10 big announcements of Bengal budget

  • Fulfilling BJP’s election promise, the state government announced a 20 percent hike in the dearness allowance (DA) of government employees. “Dearness Allowance (DA) for government employees has been increased by 20 per cent, taking the total DA to 38 per cent. This will be effective from October 1,” Dasgupta said in the Assembly.
  • Along with giving Rs 3,000 to women under Annapurna Yojana, the Finance Minister also announced a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to unmarried girl students to reduce the dropout rate of girls in higher education.
  • Among cash transfer schemes, the West Bengal government has proposed a monthly allowance of Rs 3,000 for unemployed graduates aged 21-45 from October. At the same time, other unemployed people will be given Rs 2,000 per month.
  • Dasgupta said that the benefit of this scheme will be available to those students “whose annual family income is less than Rs 1 lakh and who are not taking benefit of any other social security scheme.
  • “Retired journalists will be given a monthly pension of Rs 5,000.
  • As promised in the BJP manifesto, the government has proposed to build one IIT and one IIM in North Bengal with the help of the Centre.
  • For the Falta seat, which the party had won in the re-polling, Dasgupta announced plans to develop the area as a model.
  • The Finance Minister said, “I am proposing to form a union board for the garden workers. It will oversee different welfare projects for the tea garden workers. It is also proposed to increase the salaries of Civic Volunteers, Village Police and Green Police by Taka 2,000 from August 2026.”
  • The state government has started a techno-economic survey to introduce metro connectivity in Durgapur, Asansol, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.
  • The Finance Minister proposed to convert the Gangasagar Fair into an international, spiritual and cultural festival with the support of the Centre. Similarly, he said that Jagaddhatri Puja, Tarakeshwar Mela, Baruni Mela, Rash Mela, Jalpesh Mela and other programs will be converted into national level events.
  • “I am initiating the process of making all government systems paperless,” Dasgupta told the House.
    The state government has allocated Rs 8,565.84 crore for agriculture, Rs 2,544.48 crore for backward class welfare, Rs 3,035.95 crore for disaster management and civil defence, and Rs 3,266.59 crore for industry, commerce and enterprises.

The budget file was made of Bengali mat

When the Suvendu Adhikari-led government presented its first budget, the budget file was made of traditional Bengali mats and jute. Chief Ministers Suvendu Adhikari and Swapan Dasgupta also performed puja before presenting the budget in the Assembly.
