Who was Maulana Abul Kalam Azad?
Maulana Azad was born on 11 November 1888. His full name was Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiuddin. He was a great thinker, writer and freedom fighter. Before becoming the first Education Minister of independent India, he was also a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC). In the year 1923, at the age of just 35, he became the youngest President of the Congress. His thinking was that education is not just a means of getting a job, but a medium of giving right direction to the society.
Maulana Azad important contribution
Maulana Azad played an important role in the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia (in 1920). Later he helped in shifting the university from Aligarh to New Delhi. Laid the foundation of technical and higher education institutions in the country. Many institutions were also built in his honor like-

When and why is National Education Day celebrated?
The Government of India had announced on 11 September 2008 that 11 November every year would be celebrated as National Education Day. The purpose of this day is to remember the contribution of Maulana Azad and promote the importance of education in the country. Although it is not considered a national holiday, essay, speech, workshops and quiz competitions are organized on this day in schools, colleges and universities. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad laid the foundation on which India’s modern education system stands today. Thanks to his efforts, today lakhs of children across the country are getting the right to education. Therefore, every year on 11th November, India remembers its leader who considered education as the biggest weapon of nation building.
