The infant girl who was found abandoned in the Ashokvan nullah on October 27 has been discharged from Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli and moved to St Catherine’s Home in Andheri West.
The police are preparing to present the complete case report before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on Sunday.
According to hospital authorities, the child, who survived despite being left exposed to the elements, has not only recovered remarkably well but has also drawn significant public attention, with several individuals approaching the facility expressing interest in adopting her. “After the incident was reported widely by the media, we received quite a few calls enquiring whether the baby was up for adoption. We have informed all of them to get in touch with the Dahisar police regarding the same,” said a senior official from the hospital administration.
Hospital staff described the infant as “a fighter,” noting that she responded positively to treatment soon after admission. “She is absolutely fit and fine now. Her resilience is extraordinary, given the circumstances in which she was found,” said one of the doctors involved in her care. After a final round of medical assessments confirmed her stability, the baby was discharged on Wednesday and handed over to the Dahisar police.
“After the baby was discharged, we shifted her to St Catherine’s Home, which will be responsible for her interim care, safety, and nurturing until the legal process is completed. After compiling the detailed case report, we will be submitting it to the CWC. A court date will then be requested, during which proceedings regarding custody, charges, and welfare decisions will be conducted,” said Yogesh Patil, investigating officer from Dahisar police station.
Legal process
Police sources confirmed that a case has been registered against the child’s mother, who was traced earlier this week. Her medical examination and other procedural formalities are underway, and she is expected to be arrested. Officials added that once the probe-related procedures are completed, both the accused and the child will be presented before the court.
