Goa Taxi App War: These days, the regional fight between taxi operators and app-based cab services has gained momentum in Goa. Tourists are suffering the most from this dispute. Recently, a foreign travel influencer had to walk on foot due to unavailability of a taxi. The issue is once again in the news as to how app-based services like GoaMiles and the conflict between local drivers are affecting the image of Goa tourism.

Local taxi operator against app-based service

There has been a long-running tussle in Goa between traditional taxi drivers and app-based services like GoaMiles. Local drivers say that app services are hurting their business and distorting the market by charging low fares. GoaMiles claims that their service is transparent and digital, which gives relief to tourists from overcharging.

Tourists are facing a lot of problems

The biggest brunt of this controversy is falling on tourists. Many times tourists do not get taxis outside the airport, beach or hotel because local drivers stop app-based cabs. Regarding this, Alexander Welder, a travel influencer from Germany, has posted a video, which is becoming increasingly viral. In this video, the welder says that he had to walk long distances on foot due to the taxi dispute in Goa.

Alexander Welder claimed in the video that he booked the cab through an app because it was very cheap. Local rickshaw pullers were following him and his female companion, which he described as “a bit strange”. “They were asking for Rs 500 for a tuk-tuk ride, and we booked a cab through Goa Miles for Rs 300,” he said.

This dispute is not limited to just taxi operators but has become an example of the clash of digital versus traditional business models. While app-based companies claim to bring transparency through features like smartphone apps and GPS tracking, local drivers consider it a threat to their employment.
