Kaal Bhairav Story: The day of Kalbhairav Jayanti is dedicated to Kalbhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. According to religious scriptures, Kalbhairav was born on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha (Agahan) month. According to the calendar, in the year 2025, Kalbhairav Jayanti will be celebrated on Wednesday, 12th November. On this day, Kalabhairava, the fierce form of Lord Shiva, is worshipped. In Sanatan tradition, this day is especially considered a symbol of victory over fear and negative forces. According to a legend, once a dispute broke out between Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva) as to who was the greatest among the three. To solve this problem, a meeting of all the gods, goddesses and sages was called.
Brahma ji’s anger and insult
After discussion, all the gods and sages expressed the opinion that Lord Shiva is the best. Lord Vishnu accepted this decision, but creator Brahma ji disagreed with it. Out of arrogance, he not only opposed this decision, but in anger also used derogatory words for Lord Shiva.
Kalbhairav was born due to Shiva’s anger.
Lord Shiva became very angry due to this behavior of Lord Brahma. Shiva’s anger was so intense that at that very moment a stunning and monstrous power emerged from his body, which represented Kaal itself. This power was called Kaalbhairav. Seeing this fierce form of Shiva, all the gods and sages present there became frightened.

After creation, Kalabhairava severed one of Brahma’s five heads with his trident or nail to destroy his ego. After this incident, Brahma ji was left with only four faces.
Freedom from the sin of Brahmahatya and becoming Kotwal of Kashi.
Due to cutting off the head of Lord Brahma, Kalbhairav was accused of the sin of ‘Brahmatya’ and the severed head stuck to his hand. Lord Shiva ordered Bhairav to visit all the pilgrimage places on earth to get rid of this sin.
Freedom from sin: Kalabhairava Wherever he went, the severed head of Brahma ji did not fall from his hand. At last, when he entered the city of Kashi (Varanasi), the head fell from his hand and he was liberated from the sin of Brahmahatya.
Kapal Mochan Tirtha: The place where Lord Brahma’s head had fallen is today known as ‘Kapal Mochan Teerth’.
Kotwal of Kashi: On attaining liberation, Lord Shiva ordered Kalbhairav to stay at the same place and perform penance and become the ‘Kotwal’ (guardian) of the city of Kashi.
It is believed that before visiting Baba Vishwanath in Kashi, it is mandatory to have darshan of Kalbhairav, otherwise one does not get the full benefit of the Kashi Yatra. For this reason Lord Kalbhairav is also called ‘Kotwal of Kashi’.
