‘Yoga’, resonating in every corner of the world today, was once only the heritage of India. The story of establishing it on the global stage is no less than an exciting journey. Exactly 12 years ago, on 27 September 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his very first speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), had proposed to the world to celebrate International Yoga Day. What happened next broke all records in the history of the United Nations. Within just a few months, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations approved the resolution with the overwhelming support of a record 177 countries. This was the biggest and fastest support ever received by any resolution in the history of the UN, which made India’s soft power acknowledged in the whole world.

From Rajpath to New York and Srinagar: Unique world records of 11 years
The journey of Yoga Diwas in the last 11 years has been very ups and downs and record breaking. When the first Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015 at Rajpath in Delhi, 35,985 people and representatives of 84 countries did yoga together, creating two Guinness World Records.
After this the caravan continued moving forward:
- 2017 (Lucknow): Amidst heavy rain, PM Modi and 55 thousand people did yoga while getting wet.
- 2020-2021 (Covid period): When the entire world was confined to homes, Yoga Day changed to ‘digital and virtual’ mode and brought crores of people together in their homes.
- 2023 (New York): For the first time outside India, people from 135 countries created a new history by doing yoga together under the leadership of PM Modi in the lawns of the United Nations Headquarters.
- 2024 (Srinagar): Despite the bad weather on the banks of Dal Lake, the echo of Yoga was heard in Kashmir valleys inside Sher-e-Kashmir Convention Centre.
- 2025 (Visakhapatnam): 3.02 lakh people surprised the world by doing yoga together on the 28 km long beach of Andhra Pradesh.
- And now, Kolkata in 2026 This ‘Yoga of Boats’ and the great gathering of Red Road is all set to add a new golden chapter in this journey.
