Pakistani forces fired on Afghan border posts in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar on Thursday, according to Afghan officials and media reports. The incident occurred when the third round of talks between the two sides began in Istanbul. A government source in Spin Boldak told TOLOnews that Pakistan opened artillery and fire twice in the morning and afternoon. He said the Afghan Border Force avoided conflict as per orders and did not respond. According to reports, the motive of this attack is not clear at the moment.

No counterattack from Afghan side

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that Pakistan initiated the firing, causing concern among local residents. He said Afghan forces did not retaliate out of respect for the negotiating team and the safety of civilians. Mujahid also said that in the previous talks, it was agreed to extend the ceasefire and non-aggression agreement.

Pakistan’s warning

Hours before the attack, Pakistan Defense Minister Khawaja Asif had warned that failure in the Istanbul talks could increase the possibility of war. He said, ‘If the talks fail, the situation will worsen. We are under attack, so our option is to respond. When asked if this meant war, he said clearly, ‘Yes, only war.’
