If you are washing heavy sarees at home, then use mild liquid detergent in lukewarm water. Do not rub the saree vigorously, just gently dip it in water and take it out after some time. Do not use even soap to wash zari or sequin sarees. Instead, wrap it in a cotton cloth and clean it with gentle hands.

correct way to dry
If you are washing Banarasi silk or heavy sarees at home, then keep in mind that drying them in the sun can cause the color to fade. Therefore, always dry the saree from the wrong side in the shade. Hanging a heavy saree on a rope can stretch its fabric, so it would be better to spread it on a clean bed or cotton sheet and put it to dry.

It is also important to store the saree properly. Never keep the saree in a plastic bag, this causes moisture to accumulate in it and may cause mold. Always keep heavy sarees wrapped in cotton or soft cloth. Hanging a zari or heavy embroidered work saree on a hanger can stretch its fabric. Therefore keep it folded. To protect clothes from insects, you can keep neem leaves or camphor between them. But not over the clothes, apart from it. Every 3 to 4 months, take it out, keep it in air for some time and change the folds. Do not keep it in the same fold for a long time.

Never soak zari work Banarasi sarees in water. Rather, it would be better to get them dry cleaned. Kanjeevaram is made of pure silk, dry it in shade and store it wrapped in cotton cloth.
