Bannu (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa): Heart-wrenching news has once again emerged from Pakistan’s troubled province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday. Two serial roadside bomb blasts in Bannu district have shaken the entire area. Due to this horrific ‘double blast’, at least seven innocent people died tragically on the spot, while three others are seriously injured. Although no militant organization has yet claimed responsibility for this dastardly act, the timing of the blast and the strategy behind it have put the security agencies in deep suspense.
Passenger van journey and suddenly IED explodes: First blast!
This dreadful incident took place in Marka Bera area of Bannu district. On Saturday morning, a passenger van carrying innocent people was going from Hathi Khel village towards Bannu city. The people in the van were traveling at their own pace, but little did they know that death was waiting for them on the way. According to Bannu District Police Officer (DPO) Yasir Afridi, a highly powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was already hidden on the roadside. As soon as the passenger van reached that point, there was a loud explosion. The van was blown apart and five people died on the spot in agony.

Rescue team targeted: Dreadful trap of second blast!
The most frightening and suspenseful aspect of this incident came to light shortly after the first blast. When hearing the screams, the people nearby and the helpers engaged in rescue work ran to take the injured passengers out of the van, at the same place there was another massive explosion. According to police investigators, this second blast was deliberately planned as a ‘trap’ to target the rescue team and the gathered crowd. This second suicide bombing took the lives of two more helpers and a vehicle engaged in relief work was also completely damaged.
Horrible changing pattern of violence and increasing tension from Afghanistan
This attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is not an isolated incident, but this violence of terrorism in Pakistan has now turned into a very worrying pattern. A massive 27% increase in terrorist attacks across Pakistan was recorded in May 2026 alone, with civilian casualties rising by a staggering 92%. Along with this, the train blasts carried out by the Baloch Liberation Army in Balochistan (in which 24 were killed) and the air strikes carried out by Pakistan within the border of Afghanistan have endangered the security of this entire region.
Bannu turned into a cantonment, Chief Minister ordered strict investigation
Immediately after the double blast, Pakistani security forces and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the entire Marka Bera area and converted it into a cantonment. Forensic teams have started collecting debris and chemical evidence from the spot. Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi have strongly condemned the incident. Calling it “heart-wrenching”, the Chief Minister has ordered a thorough investigation by the Director General of Police. He has instructed the hospitals to provide the best treatment to the injured, but the big question is that amid the failure of the intelligence system, will the police be able to expose the mastermind of this bloody conspiracy?
