Dutch East India Company discovered
This is about the time when imperialism had its dominance all over the world. In the 17th century, European powers were continuously expanding their empire. These powers were trying to make more and more part of North America a part of their empire. These included the Dutch, who were in search of more and more spices and resources, so that they could exploit these resources by making the area rich in them their own.
Henry Hudson of the Dutch East India Company, working under Prince Maurice of Nassau, was also on a boat in search of such resources. At the beginning of the century, while traveling, he reached the Dutch Manhattan Island. He did not find spices etc. there but found a strategic place for business. Since the Dutch East India Company of the Netherlands had the right to trade in Asia. Therefore this place was handed over to the Dutch West India Company, which had the right to trade in America and Africa etc.

New Amsterdam, a city near the Amsterdam Fortress
In the year 1621, the Dutch West India Company started managing trade in North America. He found it suitable to make the area at the mouth of the Hudson River his strategic outpost, from where it was easy to establish trade and protect the area. For this, the Dutch established a fort there in the year 1624, which was named Amsterdam. In the year 1626, the Dutch purchased Manhattan from the Native Americans. Over time, the settlement developed in the area around this Amsterdam Fort, which was called New Amsterdam. In the year 1653, this settlement also got municipal rights from the Netherlands and it started developing as an imperial city. Churches, fortified walls, houses and windmills were established.
The British gave the name New York
However, New Amsterdam did not remain under the control of the Dutch for long. It was the year 1664, despite the peace, some British warships entered the port of New Amsterdam and demanded the surrender of this city, which at that time was part of the extensive New Netherland Province. With this the second Anglo-Dutch war also started. However, the Dutch were defeated in this and in the year 1665, the British named it New York after the Duke of Arc. In 1673, during the Third Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch once again took it under their control and named it New Orange. Under the Treaty of Westminster in 1674, this city was returned to the British and Suriname came under the Dutch. The British again named it New York.
