In ancient times, human society was matrilineal. The mother’s lineage was important because it was not known who the father was. In hunter-gatherer tribes, children were like community property. Anthropologists say that the Hadja tribe of Africa lives like this even today. There is no husband and wife here. Children used to grow up in groups. But in the Neolithic Revolution (8000 BCE) farming started in Mesopotamia, Indus Valley. Grains started being stored and land ownership started. Now, who will inherit the farm after death has become a big question. For this reason, it became necessary to give the father’s name to the child so that the heir could be clear. This is how patriarchy started.
