Ekadashi is an auspicious Hindu fasting day, which is observed on the eleventh day of each lunar month. This auspicious occasion is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, with devotees seeking to attain spiritual growth, forgiveness, and divine blessings.
Every year, the Aja Ekadashi fast is observed on the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Bhadrapada. In Hinduism, the Aja Ekadashi fast holds great significance.
On this day, devotees perform rituals and fast in honour of Lord Vishnu. It is also considered highly auspicious to worship Goddess Lakshmi alongside Lord Vishnu on this day.

Significance of Aja Ekadashi
In Hinduism, Aja Ekadashi is of great importance. This fast is considered a wonderful opportunity to please Lord Vishnu. It is believed that by worshiping and fasting on this day, devotees get free from sins and attain moksha (liberation). Observing this fast is said to bring auspicious results equivalent to performing the Ashwamedha Yajna. This fast not only brings prosperity and material well-being but also contributes to spiritual progress.
A total of two Ekadashis are celebrated in the month of August. Before this, devotees fasted on Shravan Putrada Ekadashi. It also holds a lot significance in Hinduism.
Aja Ekadashi Puja Vidhi
- On this day, take a bath in the morning, wear clean clothes and take a vow to fast while meditating on Lord Vishnu.
- Install the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu at the place of worship.
- Perform proper worship with lamp, incense, flowers, fruits etc.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama and Sri Krishna bhajans.
- Stay awake at night and break the fast the next day at the appointed time.
