Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder and first Guru Nanak Dev Ji of Sikhism. It is also known as Guru Parv or Prakash Parv, which is the most important festival of Sikhism. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated every year on Kartik Purnima, which is on 5 November. This time the 556th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev will be celebrated. In this 2-day long festival, Guru Granth Sahib is recited continuously for 48 hours, processions are taken out and big langars are organized. Guru Nanak Dev Ji gave many teachings in his life which are based on humanity, equality and truth.

Principles of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Dev Ji had three main principles, which are Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako. These are commonly known as ‘Naam Japna’, ‘Kirat Karni’, and ‘Vand Chhakna’. Let us tell you what is the meaning of “Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako” and what is their importance in today’s time.

Meaning of Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Wand Chhako

The three main principles of Guru Nanak Ji, chanting the name, doing Kirat and waving the wand, show the way to make life meaningful. “Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako” means:- Chanting the name of God (Naam Japo), working hard honestly (Kirat Karo) and sharing the earned wealth with others (Vand Chhako). Even today, these principles are associated with a balanced and moral life, which emphasizes devotion, hard work and community service.

Chant the name:- Remember God and chant his name. It means connecting your consciousness to a higher power.

Do Kirat:- Earn livelihood through honesty and hard work. This principle emphasizes on working with integrity and ethical values.

Wand Chako:- Share your property, food and whatever you have earned with the needy. It promotes a sense of community and equality.

In today’s time, these principles inspire individuals to remain spiritually centered and live a life based on moral values. The spirit of “Vand Chhako” is extremely important in today’s society, where unity, charity and helping the needy strengthen the community.
