How many lamps should Dev light on Diwali?
On the day of Dev Diwali, a lamp of pure ghee or mustard oil can be lit in the house. Lighting odd numbers of lamps like 5, 7, 11, 21, 51 or 101 on this day is considered auspicious. On this day, a lamp must be lit in the kitchen, main door, Shiva temple, north-east corner of the house and near Tulsi. Due to this, happiness and prosperity remain in life.

On the day of Dev Diwali, one should wake up early in the morning and take bath. If possible, one should take bath in a holy river. If this is not possible then one should take bath at home by mixing Ganga water in water. In the evening, during Pradosh period, Lord Shiva and Shri Hari Vishnu should be worshiped in the home temple. After this, earthen lamps should be prepared for lamp donation. The lamps should be filled with pure desi ghee or sesame oil and fitted with cotton wicks. Then the lamps should be kept lit or flown at designated places.
