Worship of vagina shaped stone, not idol: There is no idol of the goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of Kamakhya temple. Here a vagina shaped stone is worshipped, from which the stream of water keeps flowing. This is called yonikund. The sanctum sanctorum is very small and deep. To go here, devotees descend the stairs and go into the dark cave. Devotees receive the blessings of the Mother Goddess by touching the vagina shaped stone and flowing water.
Goddess menstruates for 3 days: Goddess Kamakhya menstruates for 3 days in a year. That means their menstrual cycle starts. This is considered to be the most surprising thing about this temple. For this reason the doors of the temple are closed for 3 days. Darshan and worship is stopped. Probably this is the only goddess temple where this happens. It is believed that the land is most fertile at this time.
The water of the Brahmaputra river is red and the devotees wear Ambubachi clothes: During the menstruation of Kamakhya Devi, the water of Brahmaputra river flowing near the temple turns red for 3 days. When the goddess menstruates, white cotton clothes are spread near the yoni kund of the sanctum sanctorum. Then after three days, when the doors of the temple are opened, those clothes turn red with the blood of the goddess. Those clothes are called Ambubachi clothes or Angodaka clothes and are given as Prasad to the devotees.
