Canada Visa Rejection Reasons: Canada has tightened the student visa policy for Indian students this year 2025. 74% of Indian applications were rejected in August, reducing the number of Indian students in universities by two-thirds.
Canada Visa Rejection Rate 2025: Canada, once considered a dream destination for Indian students, has now become one of the most difficult countries for them. According to the latest government data, 74% of student visa applications from India were rejected in August 2025. This figure is more than double that of 32% last year in August 2023. The Canadian government has said that this step is part of an effort to stop fraud and reduce the number of temporary migrants, but the biggest impact of this strictness has been on Indian students.
Now Canada’s stance has changed
Since 2023, Canada has reduced the limit of its international student permits twice. While earlier Indian students were counted in lakhs every year, in August 2025 only 4,515 Indian students applied, whereas in 2023 the number was 20,900. That means Indian student applications decreased by 78% in two years.
Why are there so many visa rejections?
Canada’s Immigration Department said it was receiving several fake offer letters and fraudulent documents, most of which were related to applications from India. In 2023, 1,550 fake letters were identified, while in 2024 this number reached more than 14,000. Now Canada has made its verification system more stringent. Now applicants not only have to provide bank statements but also the source of money.
Relations between India and Canada will also be affected
In 2023, the then Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau had accused India of being involved in the murder of a Canadian citizen. India had completely rejected it. After that, tension increased in the relations between the two countries, the effect of which is now clearly visible on the student visa policy.
Number of Indians decreasing in Canadian universities
Many of Canada’s top universities such as the University of Waterloo, University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan have reported that the number of Indian students has declined by two-thirds in the last 3-4 years. Ian Vanderberg, an official at the University of Waterloo, said, ‘We are an international university and have always been proud of diversity, but the new government policy has completely changed the demography of our campus.’
India’s reaction
The Indian Embassy in Ottawa said, ‘We know that the visa rejection rate for Indian students has increased, but it is Canada’s right to grant study permits. Nevertheless, we believe that Indian students contribute to the world with their talent. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand also admitted that ‘the government is concerned about the integrity of the immigration system, but we want to retain Indian students.’
What are the options for students now?
Many education consultants believe that students who till now considered Canada as their first choice, are now turning to countries like Australia, UK and Germany. At the same time, some students say that they do not regret after getting the visa rejected, because now it has become difficult to get jobs and get PR in Canada. Some are happy they didn’t go there.
