Bangladesh forms committee to probe reason behind national cricket team’s withdrawal from ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India

As per the latest insights coming directly from the world of Bangladesh Cricket, their Ministry of Youth and Sports in the nation has decided to – and even- formed a three-member committee to investigate what could be said is a serious matter.

And one that disagrees to die down despite now nearly being a quarter of a year! The matter actually pertains to the Men’s national cricket team’s controversial withdrawal from the most talked about and successful global event in the men’s game- the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup! Now, that leads to a question- what is the panel tasked with doing?

Apparently, the role of the panel is to engage in discerning reviews of certain administrative decisions so that it could be determined whether or not any diplomatic or strategic failures occurred.

Having said that, there has been widespread criticism given the way the previous committee handled the issue, a cause of glaring concern.

The following salient pointers need to be addressed and followed-

Committee Members: The current panel boasts of eminent names in the country involved with the sport and holding a public image. It is convened by Dr. AKM Oli Ullah (who happens to be Additional Secretary, Administration). The rest of the 2 members happen to be the former Bangladesh captain and chief selector Habibul Bashar and that’s not all- but even the Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dastagir.

Deadline: an important point here being the deadline on which the newly formed committee has to submit its findings. The same involves preparation of a comprehensive report that has to be submitted to the Sports Ministry within 15 working days.

Background: here’s exactly what happened. Just ahead of the tournament, the Bangladesh men’s team cited a lack of security or simply put, security concerns for their refusal to participate in the tournament in its India leg for which they had even put forth a request to the ICC to shift their games’ venue to Sri Lanka. The request was denied and later, upon their withdrawal, the Scotland team was interred into the ICC tournament.

All of what happened led to a controversy that also allegedly included a controversial event seen largely as an aftermath of the Bangladesh decision to withdraw from the tournament. Famous fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the IPL following threats from extremist groups, a decision largely believed to have been singularly taken by the BCCI. Moreover, the then Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which was led by Aminul Islam, had been expressed concerns over the safety of players, officials and even the journalists that were travelling to India for the T20 World Cup tournament.
