New Delhi: To ensure she didn’t lose focus, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur’s family didn’t tell her about her grandmother’s heart attack ahead of India’s all-important final against South Africa in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 on Sunday. Amanjot plucked the crucial catch of centurion Laura Wolvaardt in the final as India successfully defended a total of 298 runs to beat South Africa by 52 runs and lift their maiden Women’s World Cup title.
Wolvaardt was going strong in the middle, having completed her ton in the final when Amanjot held on to a juggling catch to help India get a crucial breakthrough in the final. The wicket proved to a be a turning point in the game as the Proetas lost their next three wickets inside 26 runs to suffer a crushing defeat in the final.
Amanjot, who scored 12 runs in the final, later bowled four overs with the ball during South Africa’s run chase, but ended up going wicketless. Nonetheless, she was excellent on the field, and her game-changing catch of Wolvaardt paved the way for India’s memorable triumph in the final.
As Amanjot shone on the big stage, her family fought an emotional battle back home. The cricketer’s grandmother suffered a heart attack last week. However, Amanjot’s family decided not to inform her about her grandmother’s condition to ensure she didn’t lose focus ahead of the all-important final. Amanjot’s grandmother, one of her biggest supporters, received updates on India’s matches from the cricketer’s father.
Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, who works as a carpenter, revealed that his mother was the cricketer’s biggest supporter growing up. Amanjot’s grandmother would watch from the sidelines and cheer for her when she used to play with the boys in the neighbourhood in her younger days. Amanjot’s grandmother would also ensure nobody troubled her granddaughter while playing.
“My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and the park at our Phase 5 residence in Mohali. While I would be at my carpentry shop at Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys as well as other girls,” Amanjot’s father told The Indian Express.
“After she suffered a heart attack last month, we did not tell Amanjot about it and the last few days have seen us spending time in hospitals for her treatment. The World Cup win has surely come as a balm in these tense times for us,” he added.
