A candidate referred by an engineer failed a ‘3 sum’ coding problem. As a result, the company decided to re-interview the referring engineer to test his qualifications. This post went viral on the internet.
A software engineer’s post has created a stir on the internet. The woman claimed that her company’s HR team wanted to re-interview her because the candidate she had referred could not solve a basic coding problem during the hiring process. X user Aditi shared a screenshot of an email, which purportedly came from the hiring team. According to the screenshot, the candidate could not solve a ‘3 sum’ coding problem, a well-known programming challenge often asked in technical interviews.
The email read, “The candidate you referred could not solve even a basic ‘3 sum’ problem. This raises serious questions about your judgment and ability to evaluate candidates. We are now raising questions on the basis on which you recommended this person.” The email further said, “Therefore, we have decided that you will also undergo a new technical interview. We want to verify your competence once again.”
While sharing the screenshot, Aditi jokingly wrote, “Referred a friend for a job. Now HR wants to interview me again.”
After this post, there was a flood of programming jokes, memes and office anecdotes. At-home salon, spa and wellness service platform Yes Madam also participated in the meme fest and wrote, “I go to do good, I become a meme.”

Another user commented, “This is why people don’t respond when strangers ask for referrals. Referrals aren’t just about forwarding resumes. You’re putting your own reputation at stake.”
