Mythological story of Tulsi marriage
According to the legend, Mother Tulsi’s name in her previous birth was Vrinda, who was very devoted and religious. Her husband was demon king Jalandhar, who was invincible due to Vrinda’s chastity. On the prayer of the gods, Lord Vishnu broke Vrinda’s vow of marriage by deceit to kill Jalandhar. On knowing the truth, Vrinda got angry and cursed Lord Vishnu to become a stone (Shila). Lord Vishnu accepted the curse and took the form of Shaligram.
After this, Vrinda committed suicide and a Tulsi plant grew at the place where she was burnt to ashes. Pleased with Vrinda’s devotion, Lord Vishnu gave her a boon that now she would always remain with him in the form of Tulsi and she would be married to his Shaligram form every year. Since then, this sacred tradition of marriage of Tulsi and Shaligram is going on every year in the month of Kartik.
