He has been made a cabinet minister in the Telangana government. On Friday, October 31, Governor Jishnu Dev Verma administered him the oath of office and secrecy at the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy was also present during this period. Mohammad Azharuddin joined Congress in the year 2009. He has also once been an MP from Moradabad region.
