Increasing pollution harms health, doctors are advising women to avoid heavy make-up on the eyes, pollution not only affects the skin but the reason for advising to avoid make-up is the damage it is causing to the eyes. Excessive use of heavy makeup like kajal, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow etc. should be avoided.

Dr. Harbansh Lal, President and Head of Delhi Eye Center Told that women should avoid heavy makeup in areas with high pollution. This is because if a woman applies heavy make-up around the eyes, then very small particles present in pollution can get deposited in the eyes as well. This can cause allergies, itching and dryness in the eyes. This risk is more for those women who wear heavy make-up around the eyes.

Which makeup products pose the greatest risk?

Waterproof mascara and eyeliner last for a long time but require strong removers to remove them, which makes the eye skin more dry. These increase the damage caused to eyes due to pollution.

Cosmetic products may contain ingredients that can cause inflammation in the eyes. When such substances come in contact with the eyes, they can make the eye surface more sensitive and cause redness or irritation. Long-term use of these products may also increase the risk of persistent dry eyes or other ocular surface diseases.

Additionally, some makeup removers and facial cleansers can make the problem worse. When rubbed around the eyes, they can affect the delicate glands that produce oil for the tear layer. As a result, lubrication is reduced and discomfort occurs. To minimize these risks, experts recommend applying eyeliner only outside the lash line and gently cleansing the area around the eyes using products designed for sensitive eyes.
