EOU Orders Re-Verification Of SIM Distributors To Curb Cyber Fraud Syndicates

In a bid to dismantle international cyber fraud networks operating through SIM boxes, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has directed all telecom companies to re-verify their SIM card distributors and agents across Bihar.

EOU ADG Nayyar Hasnain Khan, in a coordination meeting with telecom operators on Tuesday, warned that lapses in the SIM distribution system are jeopardising state security, citizens’ privacy, and law and order. Citing the recent bust of a SIM box-based cyber fraud operation in Supaul, he stressed the need for a transparent SIM distribution process and instructed telecom companies to promptly alert police about any suspicious activities linked to cybercrime.

The meeting also decided to form two sub-groups to strengthen coordination between telecom firms and law enforcement. These groups will focus on regular dialogue, technical solutions, and strategic planning to combat evolving cybercrime tactics.

Highlighting the importance of heightened vigilance ahead of upcoming elections, ADG Khan said security of sensitive information must be ensured without any lapse.

During the meeting, SP Vinay Tiwari presented a PPT on SIM box fraud, detailing the modus operandi of cybercriminals, their foreign network links, vulnerabilities in SIM supply chains, and cryptocurrency-based payment systems. Officials were also urged to conduct awareness campaigns at all levels.
