Odisha News: A final-year college student in Odisha’s Kendrapara district died by reportedly setting herself on fire on Wednesday due to alleged continuous torture from a known man. The deceased’s father informed that she was alone in the house and poured petrol over herself before setting herself ablaze. He further stated that a man (she was in a relationship with) has been blackmailing her for the past six months over an intimate photograph, leading to her death, reported NDTV. The deceased’s father reportedly emphasised that no action was taken even after the girl had filed a complaint against the accused six months back.
“She was in a relationship with a man and was being blackmailed by him,” the deceased’s father was quoted as saying by PTI. “He had even threatened to kill my daughter by setting her on fire with the help of petrol. After learning about it from my daughter, we filed a complaint at the police station, but no action was taken against the accused,” the father was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Odisha: Father reveals chilling details
“We had reported the matter to the police around 7-8 months ago, but instead of registering a case and taking action against the accused, my daughter was advised to block him from all communication platforms,” he added. While providing details, Kendrapara Superintendent of Police Siddarth Kataria affirmed that an investigation has been ordered into the matter. “I have seen the body. Her father claimed that she died by suicide. The matter will be investigated,” Kataria was quoted as saying by PTI.
BJD slams state government
While reacting to the incident, BJD leader Lenin Mohanty stated that law and order has been suffering under the BJP rule. “It seems since the BJP assumed charge in Odisha, lawlessness has prevailed… All of this is because of institutional silence… We sincerely expect that, given his inability to oversee the Home Department and the loss of many precious lives, the CM should consider handing over the Home Department to someone else. Also, when the DGP is unable to obey the command of his own CM, why should the DGP be in his chair?… When the woman and her parents were running around for justice, where were the SP and the Inspector In-Charge?” Mohanty was quoted as saying by ANI.
