2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee gets a new turbo-four engine

New Delhi: Stellantis have a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine called the Hurricane 4 Turbo, and it is one of the first bulk-manufactured engines to use a passive turbulent jet ignition (TJI) system. In performance, it makes 324 bhp and 450 Nm of torque, and it is going to appear in the refreshed 2026 Grand Cherokee, which the brand have revealed now.

TJI makes use of a small “cup-like” pre-chamber atop each cylinder in order to initiate ignition. Once it is ignited, the burning fuel expands into a standard combustion chamber, where a faster, more complete burn occurs. Stellantis have said that the engine uses 10 per cent less fuel while managing to produce 20 per cent more power than the brand’s at present 2.0-litre four-cylinder.

The engine- coming with an aluminium block, oil pan, and timing cover- uses both port and direct fuel injection, comes with two spark plugs per cylinder and has a variable-geometry turbocharger that gives around 35 psi of boost. Stellantis have further said that the engine makes about 90 per cent of the torque between 2,600 and 5,600 rpm, with 100 per cent available between 3,000 to 4,500 rpm.

In terms of updates, apart from the engine, the 2026 Grand Cherokee gets a redesigned seven-slot grille, restyled headlights, and tweaked back and lower fascias. On the inside, it gets a 12.3-inch infotainment display with an available 10.3-inch passenger screen.

Jeep have brought down the lineup to just three variants, Laredo, Limited and Summit. The Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine comes in the base Laredo trim, but if the customer opts for the upgraded Laredo Altitude, you can come with the brand’s new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Whether this powertrain is coming to India remains unknown.
