Club World Cup: Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund seal quarter-final spots

New Delhi: Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup. The Spanish club beat Juventus, while Dortmund defeated Monterrey in the round of 16 clash. Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund joined Bayern Munich, PSG, Al Hilal, Fluminense, Chelsea and Palmeiras in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus

Real Madrid defeated Juventus 1-0 and secured their quarter-final spot in the Club World Cup at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Wednesday. Juventus started the first half strongly, but Madrid gained control of the match slowly.

Randal Kolo Muani missed an early goal-scoring opportunity for the Italian club as he tried to chip the ball over goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois but failed to send the ball over. Juventus were much more confident on the ball after their 5-2 loss against Manchester City.

But the Spanish club gained momentum and increased the pressure. They maintained their dominance in the second half and created several chances. Bellingham and Valverde both came close before the match-winning goal arrived. Alexander-Arnold delivered a precise cross, which found Gonzalo, and he converted it with an accurate header.

Juventus tried to respond through Francisco Conceicao’s low shot, but it was well saved by Courtois. The Spanish side continued to press as Valverde attempted an overhead kick, and Arda Guler’s attempt was saved by Di Gregorio. Nicolas Gonzalez fired a long-range shot but failed to equalise as Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals.

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Monterrey

Borussia Dortmund beat Mexican club Monterrey 2-1 in the round of 16 clash and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Georgia on Wednesday. Serhou Guirassy’s brace helped the German club to qualify as Berterame’s second-half goal for the Mexican club went in vain.

Guirassy scored the opening goal of the match in the 14th minute. He exchanged quick passes with Karim Adeyemi on the edge of the box to confuse Rodríguez and netted with a slick finish. He scored his second goal 10 minutes later. Dortmund will take on Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid in the quarterfinal at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 6.
