Why is Kantara Chapter 1 coming on OTT before time?
Rishabh Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 is going to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on October 31, just four weeks after its theatrical release. This news has shaken the entire trade world. Many have raised the question that such a short OTT window could affect the film’s box office performance. Reacting to this, Chaluve Gowda, Partner, Homble Films, clarified that the reason for premature streaming on digital is the agreement signed 3 years ago. Gowda told India Today that currently only Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam versions of the film will be released on OTT, the Hindi version will not be streamed. He told that one will have to wait for eight weeks to watch the film in Hindi. He further said that small OTT windows have now become common in theaters in the South. Most South movies are now running on a four-week window. Every film has its own agreement and timeline. Before Covid, there were eight weeks for all films. After Covid, even big releases like Coolie were streamed on OTT after four weeks in all languages including Hindi.
