How is lipstick made?

  1. Wax to solid base: The process of making lipstick is scientific and very controlled. Wax gives size to lipstick. For this, normal seedswax, candelilla wax or carnauba wax is used. If the brand is vegan, seedswax is replaced with wax derived from plants.
  2. Moisture and Shine from Oil: Oils make lipstick smooth and creamy. Castor oil, jojoba oil, mineral oil or coconut oil are usually used for this.
  3. Colors and shades for pigments: This part is the most popular. The colors used in lipstick are either mineral based (like iron oxide, titanium dioxide) or organic (food grade). Some older companies used animal-derived pigments such as carmine – which was made from the cochineal insect. But most brands today are vegan or use synthetic pigments.
  4. Emollients and Preservatives: It keeps lipstick fresh and hydrated for a long time. Examples – Vitamin E, Shea butter, and Tocopherol.

This is a complete myth. Pig blood, fat or blood of any animal is not mixed in making lipstick. This confusion probably spread because some older non-vegan products used animal fat (like lard) or carmine color (derived from insects). But now almost all the brands have moved towards cruelty-free (animal testing free) and vegan lipsticks. Certified vegan lipstick brands include Disguise Cosmetics, Daughter Earth, Plum, Forest Essentials, Sugar and Faces Canada.
