A statue of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was reportedly shot at by unidentified assailants in Sawantkheda village of Dabwali, Haryana, triggering outrage and grief among his supporters.
His mother, Charan Kaur, took to Instagram to express her anguish over the incident, calling it a fresh attack on her son’s memory.
In her post, written in Punjabi, she described the act as a “wound to her soul”, adding that her son’s enemies were not letting him rest in peace. “My son remained the voice of the people’s rights, and an attempt is being made to silence him even after he went to the Almighty,” she wrote.
She further said that while her son may be gone, his legacy endures. “I want to tell everyone that one day, the guilty will definitely be punished for their actions. Our silence is not our defeat,” she added, asserting that Moosewala was “a movement that will always continue.”
The statue, which was installed last year by Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) state president Digvijay Chautala, was reportedly damaged in the firing incident. A video of the shooting, allegedly filmed by the attackers, was sent to Chautala from an international number on July 29, as per a PTI report. It came with a warning that Moosewala’s sympathisers would be targeted next.
According to reports, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a social media post, gang members Goldy Dhillon and Arzoo Bishnoi accused Digvijay Chautala and Gagan Khokri of misleading the public by portraying Moosewala as a martyr. They issued a warning, stating that statues should be installed for Bhagat Singh or martyred soldiers, not for the singer.
Moosewala, who had joined the Congress party in December 2021 ahead of Punjab’s assembly elections, was shot dead in Mansa, Punjab, on May 29, 2022. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang was named as the key accused in the singer’s killing.
A case has been registered in Dabwali, and the investigation is ongoing.
