India’s final league stage game of the ICC Women’s World Cup proved to be a damp squib as, despite dominating the contest, the Women in Blue could not register the win and had to share points, although this led to major embarrassment for Pakistan.
As a result of the match, Bangladesh finished with three points in seven games on the table. After winning their first fixture over Pakistan in Colombo, the Nigar Sultana-led side has suffered six defeats in a row despite close contests against England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
After making 119 runs in 27 overs, Bangladesh were heading towards another defeat in their final group stage game. Chasing a revised total of 126, India were 57-0 in 8.4 overs before rain once again hit the DY Patil Stadium and the game was washed out as the Women in Blue did not play their minimum quota of 20 overs.
Bangladesh’s Lucky Point Leads To Pakistan’s Embarrassment
The result means Bangladesh finished with three points on the table. Coming into the game, they were in last place on the table with two points, and a defeat would have cemented an 8th place on the table. However, it is Pakistan who have finished with the wooden spoon.
Despite finishing the campaign winless, Pakistan had three points on the board as their games against England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka finished in a washout at Colombo’s Premedasa Stadium.
Although, Bangladesh and Pakistan had the same points, the former finished higher on the table on the basis of having more wins, which is the first tie-breaker criterion. Had that been equal, it would have been decided by Net Run Rate (NRR), where Bangladesh were also much better placed than the Women in Green.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka finished fifth with five points while T20 World Cup champions New Zealand secured sixth spot with just four points.
Meanwhile, table toppers Australia will face India, who finished fourth in the semi-final on Thursday (October 30) at Navi Mumbai, while second-placed England will take on South Africa in Guwahati on Wednesday (October 29).
