Questions raised on central government regarding Telegram

  • Congress leader Sandeep Dixit on Tuesday criticized the Central Government’s move to ban the Telegram platform for a certain period of time. He called it a ‘complete failure of the government’ and said that banning just one platform will not solve the big problem.
  • Dixit said that Telegram is also an encrypted messaging platform like WhatsApp and other communication apps. He raised the question why only Telegram is being targeted.

Why is only Telegram banned?

  • This is a complete failure of the government in the case of NEET. Telegram is also an encrypted messaging channel like WhatsApp and other platforms. If the government feels that such platforms are responsible, then why is only Telegram being singled out? There are many ways in which people can hide their identity or speak anonymously. Banning Telegram will only cause problems to those who use it for general communication.
  • He further alleged that misinformation spreads on many platforms. He argued that the government’s focus should be on addressing the real reasons behind exam rigging rather than banning any one messaging service.

NTA gave the big reason for this?

  • This restriction has been imposed in view of a special feature of the platform, which has been used to create false evidence of ‘paper leak’ after national examinations.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued these strict instructions following the recommendations of NTA and Higher Education Department, so that organized cheating gangs can be curbed.
  • According to NTA, this ban on the platform has been imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Along with this temporary ban, MeitY has also directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature for messages already posted in India. This rule will remain in force till June 30, 2026.
  • NTA said that cheating networks were actively using these platform features to cheat the candidates appearing for the re-examination to be held on June 21, 2026.
