Russia on Trump Tariff Threat India: Russia termed the pressure being put on India by the US as ‘illegal and unacceptable’, saying that any sovereign nation has the right to choose its business partner. Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said that we do not consider such threats valid. Countries like India have the right to take decisions according to their business interests.

Peskov further said that we believe that sovereign countries have the right to choose their business and economic partners and decide the form of cooperation that is beneficial for them.

New threats of Trump, but Russia did not bow down

On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose new restrictions on Russia’s energy export policy and the country that will continue to buy oil from Russia will also be taken action. Trump clearly said that if Russia does not take steps towards stopping Ukraine war, then other countries including India will have to suffer. However, there was no change in the policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin and he ignored Trump’s deadline.

India has described Trump’s threats as unjust. The ministry said that it would not compromise with its economic interest and national security. The Ministry of External Affairs said that India is a major economy and will take every necessary steps to protect its national interests.

India also reminded that when India started importing oil from Russia after the Ukraine War, the US itself encouraged it. Now that India is taking decisions in its market interest, it is unfair to put unilateral pressure on it.

Government sources told Reuters that India would continue to purchase oil from Russia despite Trump’s threats. A senior official said on the condition of anonymity that our purpose is to meet our energy requirements, and we will not bow down to any external pressure.
