Ajinkya Rahane has experienced both the highs and lows of international cricket. From leading India to a historic Test victory in Australia to being left out of the national team despite years of service, the veteran batter knows what it takes to stay grounded.
After scoring a superb 159 for Mumbai against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy on Sunday, October 26, Rahane shared a heartfelt message for Sarfaraz Khan, who continues to wait for a national call-up despite his outstanding domestic record.
Speaking to The Indian Express after his innings, Rahane said, “The only thing I can tell him is don’t get distracted or frustrated. It is very easy to say but very hard to do. Just focus on your cricket and keep scoring runs. He has been doing that really well. As a player, when you go through this phase, it is challenging and tough, but keep your head down and control what you can.”
Rahane’s advice came from experience. The after being overlooked for India’s Test tour of Australia in the 2024-25 season, despite consistent performances in domestic cricket and a strong showing in the World Test Championship final in 2023.
Speaking after his 42nd first-class century, Rahane admitted his disappointment but maintained a balanced perspective. “I thought an .There was no communication. I was ready for the Australia series,” he said.
EXPERIENCE OVER AGE
Rahane also dismissed suggestions that age was a factor behind his exclusion. “It is not about age. It is about intent, passion and how much effort you are willing to give for red-ball cricket. Experience matters. Look at Michael Hussey. He made his Test debut in his 30s and still scored plenty of runs,” Rahane said.
The Mumbai captain also addressed criticism about his place in the team, dedicating his hundred to his family for their constant support. “There are many unwanted opinions, but I know what I can do. My family and kids have always believed in me,” he added.
For Sarfaraz Khan, who continues to pile up domestic runs without national recognition, Rahane’s words serve as both encouragement and perspective. From one seasoned professional to another, his message was clear: stay patient, keep working, and let the runs do the talking.
