In the 2020 assembly elections, Congress candidate Vishwanath Ram created a major upset and won by 21,204 votes. He defeated veteran JDU leader and two-time MLA Santosh Kumar Nirala.

JDU’s dominance in Rajpur assembly seat 2015
In 2015, JDU’s Santosh Kumar Nirala had won by getting 84,184 votes. At that time he defeated BJP’s Vishwanath Ram by about 32,788 votes. JDU’s victory in this election had further strengthened the wave of Nitish Kumar.
JDU’s first victory in Rajpur assembly seat in 2010
In 2010 also, Santosh Kumar Nirala had performed brilliantly. He had captured this seat for the first time by defeating LJP candidate Chhedi Lal Ram. At that time he got about 54,802 votes.
Deep impact of caste equation on Rajpur assembly seat
The total population of Rajpur Assembly is about 4.49 lakh. A large part of the rural population here belongs to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
