Corneal blindness: It is very important to save eyesight nowadays. Because the fast screens that are entering our life, the eyes are bound to be damaged. Corneal blindness, which was once limited to the elderly, is now emerging as a major threat to the youth of India. This serious disease of blindness, but to a large extent prevention is increasing rapidly in teenagers and young adults across the country.
Recently, this worrying Hatal was highlighted at the Indian Society of Corna and Cerato-Rifractive Surgeons (ISCKRS) Conference held in New Delhi. In this big conference, where well-known eye experts across the country have warned that in India, the blindness related to the corneal blindness, ie the eye effigy, is rapidly engulfing the youth. This is the disease that was previously considered to be the problem of the elderly, but now boys and girls under 30 years of age have started falling in it.
Got in new Delhi Indian Society of Cornia and Cerato-Rifractive Surgeons This was a big revelation in the National Conference of (ISCKRS) in 2025. Dr. Rajesh Sinha, Professor of AIIMS Delhi Told that 20,000 to 25,000 new cases come up every year and it is a matter of concern that a large number of them are of young people. They say that a situation has been created where a minor eye injury, redness, burning or infection, if not shown on time, can go to human light. And the sad thing is that in most cases this blindness can be completely stopped.
When does corneal blindness happen
The corneal blindness occurs when the transparent part of the eye i.e. the cornea is spoiled by a lack of injury, infection or nutrition. Especially in villages, young boys and girls working in fields or in factories often get hurt in the eyes. But instead of treatment, they trust home remedies. The problem starts from here. The infection increases, the cornea deteriorates and gradually the eye goes away forever.
Because of what is the corneal blindness happening
Another big reason is the deficiency of vitamin A, which is still common in children and adolescents. Apart from this, in villages and towns, people still lack the eye, timely treatment and lack of information. Dr. Ekida Lal, who is an eye specialist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi Hai says that it is very sad that even in the year 2025, we are not able to save thousands of young eyes. While both its treatment and prevention are possible.
Facilities for treating corneal blindness
India requires 1 lakh corneal transplant every year, but only 40,000 can be done. Lack of donor, lack of good surgeon and lack of better eye bank is a big problem. Therefore, now there is a need to spread public awareness about the health of the eyes, regular eye tests should be done in schools, youth should get safety gear and every human being should be motivated to donate eye.
Focus on new suggestions
It was also suggested in the conference that 1,000 new cornea specialist doctors should be prepared in the coming five years. Also, 50 to 100 new eye banks should be built in different states of India. Especially it has become very important to reach villages with innovation like telemedicine and mobile eye clinics. The message is clear, if we still do not warn, then every year thousands of young eyes will only go into the dark due to our negligence and lack of information.
If you want any youth of the country to lose their light, then take this information forward. Tell the people around you not to ignore the problem of light eyes. Get timely tested, be safe and be aware of eye donation.
