According to the legend, in ancient times there used to be a king named Priyamvad. The king had no children. Because of this he and his wife felt sad. The king and his queen Malini had tried many measures to have a child, but every time they were disappointed. One day the king along with his queen reached Maharishi Kashyap.
Maharishi Kashyap organized a yagya to fulfill the wish of the king and queen to have children. A kheer was made to be offered in the yagya. Kheer was sacrificed in the yagya. After this, the kheer that was left was given to the queen to eat. The queen ate the kheer. The queen became pregnant due to the effect of kheer. After some time they had a son, but he was dead. Seeing this the king and queen were very sad.
After this the king took the body of his dead son to the crematorium. In the cremation ground the king decided that he too would sacrifice his life. As soon as this thought came to the king’s mind, a goddess appeared before him. The goddess who appeared before the king was the mental daughter of Lord Brahma. The king asked who he was. On this the Goddess told that she was born from the sixth part of the basic nature of the universe and her name is Shashthi.
The goddess asked the king to worship her and inspire others to do the same. The goddess told the king that by doing this he would be freed from this sorrow. After this, the king, wishing to have a son, observed a fast on Goddess Shashthi and a son was born to him. Since then Shashthi i.e. Chhathi Maiya has been worshipped.
