Diogo Jota and Andre Silva receive special tribute from boyhood club

New Delhi: The boyhood club of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva has dedicated their 2025-26 season kit to honour their former football stars who lost their lives in a car crash last month. Jota, who played for Portugal and Premier League club Liverpool and his younger brother Silva both began their football journeys with Gondomar SC before rising through the ranks.

The accident that took place on 3 July in Zamora, Spain, sent shockwaves through the football community. To honour their memory, now Gondomar SC has gone beyond the usual tributes as they have got the feature images of both the stars in all their three kits- home, away and third.

More than a kit, a lasting legacy

The back of each shirt will also carry the brothers’ names below an infinity symbol giving a clear message that their influence and spirit will remain a part of the club forever. In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Gondomar wrote, “Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football.”

The post added, “Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it’s like stepping on the field with them.” It’s a powerful statement that reflects how deeply rooted the two brothers were in the identity of their hometown club.

Tributes pour in beyond Portugal

Jota was 28 while Silva was just 25 years old and were both raised in Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto. Gondomar SC had already named its football academy after Jota in 2022. Now, this jersey stands as an eternal tribute to something the club said goes beyond football, symbolising legacy, family and love for their roots.

Earlier, Liverpool had also paid the tribute to their star. The club has retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt and announced a “Forever 20” emblem to be worn on their kits next season. A memorial sculpture is also in the works to honour the brothers.
