A video of Gorakhpur Zoo in Uttar Pradesh is going viral on social media. In the video, an elephant is given a large block of ice filled with fruits. But people are paying more attention to the chain tied on the elephant’s leg than this gift. Dr Yogesh Pratap of Gorakhpur Zoo had posted these videos as part of the zoo’s ‘summer management’ initiative to save animals from the heat. In these videos, a zoo employee is seen placing a large block of fruit and honey flavored ice in front of the elephant.
The elephant hesitates a bit at first, then uses his foot to break the block of ice. After this, he is seen picking and eating the fruits stuck in the snow, one by one. While commenting in the video, Dr. Pratap explained the purpose of this icy gift and the elephant’s reaction to it.
“At first he was surprised and was wondering how to eat it as it was cold. Then he found his way, broke it with his feet and calmly took out the fruits one by one and ate them,” Dr Pratap said in the video. But much of the conversation in the comments section focused on the chain tied to the elephant’s leg, with many people questioning why the animal was chained.
