Disquieting silence on Durand Line, but situation can worsen any time on Pak-Afghan border

There is an old dispute between Pakistan and Taliban regarding Durand Line and TTP. There is a temporary peace after the recent military conflict, but tensions remain. Pakistan is also worried about India’s role in this matter.

AOn one side is Pakistan with nuclear power, and on the other side is Taliban, which has nothing except fighters. Even the Taliban do not know where half the weapons left by the old Afghan soldiers have gone. Whatever is there, there is no training to run it and there is no money for repairs. But in the fight between these two, according to some reports, it was Pakistan that took the first step back. The enmity between the two is very old and will not end so soon. There are reports that China suspects India’s role in this fight. The visit of Taliban Foreign Minister to India could be a reason for this doubt. Well, this tour has definitely given Pakistan sleepless nights.

There is currently peace between Afghanistan and Pakistan

There is peace now, but it is an uneasy peace. This was the situation after the Afghan-Pakistan ceasefire. The battle began on the 15th. Pakistan even fielded fighter planes. At the same time, the Taliban celebrated by showing the pants and guns left by the fleeing Pakistani soldiers. Both claimed that they were ahead. It is not clear what the truth is. Afghanistan said that Pakistan requested for a ceasefire, while Pakistan says that the opposite happened. Neither of them even admitted that there was any middleman, although the names of Qatar and Saudi were heard.

Durand Line

There has always been tension on both sides of the Durand Line, built in 1893. This is the line that was then drawn between British India and Afghanistan. Afghanistan did not like it even then. One reason for this was the opposition of the Pashtuns living in that area. They said that because of this line they will be divided on this side and the other side of the border. But, the British rulers in India did not pay attention to these objections and built the border. The pro-British Emir of Afghanistan accepted it, but no subsequent Afghan government ever accepted it. He rejected it as a colonial-era agreement.

Tehreek-e-Taliban

For this reason the tension on the Durand Line never ended. The resentment of Pashtuns continued to flare up from time to time. Not only this, the Durand Line also remained an issue in the mutual conflict between the empires. On top of that, infiltration and attacks became a headache for Pakistan. Pakistan claims that Pak Taliban, i.e. Tehrik-e-Taliban, is behind this. Afghanistan is the home of TTP leaders. TTP members hail from tribal areas along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

Pakistan had thought that after the arrival of Taliban government in Afghanistan, infiltration and attacks would stop. But, this also did not happen. TTP says that they will keep fighting until they get autonomy in the border area. Taliban will not mess with TTP. In a way they are allies. Taliban feels that Islamic State of Khorasan will benefit by fighting TTP. Taliban alleges that the Pakistani army is nurturing ISIS on the Pak-Afghan border.

multiple interests

Even though Pakistan has more military power, the confidence of pushing back even a superpower like America boosts the morale of Taliban. When the war with Pakistan intensified, the Taliban’s foreign minister was in India. Pakistan does not like that India is building relations with Afghanistan. One side believes that Taliban also has some trump cards. There are reports that Islamic political parties of Pakistan are interested in Taliban, but they do not want war. In short, there are many sides to this issue. Even though it has calmed down now, further explosions should be expected. Even if both countries cannot afford another war, because after all it is a war.
