When Amavasya falls on Monday, it is called Somvati Amavasya, the importance of which increases manifold. This year, Somvati Amavasya falling on 15 June 2026 is being considered special because a rare coincidence of Mithun Sankranti is also taking place on this day. Most of the people take bath, tarpan and puja in the morning on Amavasya, but special puja is prescribed on the evening of Somvati Amavasya also. According to religious beliefs, worship done at dusk pleases both Lord Shiva and the ancestors. According to the Panchang, the auspicious time of twilight on June 15, 2026 will be from 7:17 pm to 7:37 pm. Performing puja during this time will be fruitful.

What to do during evening puja?
On the evening of Somvati Amavasya, first of all light a lamp and meditate on Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Offer water on Shivalinga and chant Om Namah Shivay mantra. Lighting a mustard oil or ghee lamp under a Peepal tree at dusk is also considered auspicious. There is also a tradition of circling the Peepal tree at many places. It is believed that this provides relief from Pitra Dosh and maintains happiness and peace in the family. Donating clothes or money to needy people in the evening is also considered very virtuous.
What not to do during evening puja?
On the evening of Somvati Amavasya, one should avoid anger, dispute and saying anything wrong to anyone. According to religious beliefs, negative behavior on this day can reduce the auspicious effect of worship. There should be no darkness in the house during puja on this day. Be sure to light lamps at dusk and keep the place of worship clean. On this day it is advised to stay away from non-vegetarian food, alcohol and Tamasic food. Making fun of or disrespecting the work done for ancestors is also considered inauspicious. Also, returning empty handed to a needy person is not considered appropriate on this day, hence if possible, donate something to him.
