Budhi Diwali is celebrated a month after Diwali in Shillai of Sirmaur district and Nirmand area of Kullu district of the state. This year the festival of Budhi Diwali will start from November 20 and will be celebrated for three to four days, but why is Budhi Diwali celebrated in Himachal Pradesh? Why is Budhi Diwali celebrated?
There is a belief in Shilai of Sirmaur that when Lord Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after killing Lankapati Ravana and completing 14 years of exile, this news became known in the entire country, but in the hilly areas, the news of Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya reached late. Then Diwali started being celebrated here after a month. On this auspicious occasion, married daughters and relatives are invited home.
Whereas in Nirmand area of Kullu district, Budhi Diwali is associated with Lord Parshuram. According to beliefs, Lord Parshuram had killed a demon here. After this people celebrated by lighting torches. Every year a torch procession is taken out here on Budhi Diwali. Also tug of war and traditional folk songs are organised.

It is also linked to the memory of the killing of the demon Vrittasur. According to the legend, Devraj Indra had killed Vrittasur with a weapon made from the bones of Maharishi Dadhichi. On the victory of Devraj Indra, people lit torches on the night of Margashirsha Amavasya and celebrated the victory of good over evil.
Traditional dances are performed on the day of Budhi Diwali. Folk songs are sung. On Budhi Diwali, local people perform Nati, Rasa, Virah Geet Bhayuri, Parokadiya Geet, Swang and Hudak dance. During this, traditional dishes like Muda, Shakuli, Chidwa and walnuts are distributed to each other and good wishes are given.
