A report published in The New York Times states that the company is planning to increase the use of automation and robots in its operations. This report is based on leaked information from Amazon. This major change in jobs due to automation will take place in Amazon’s US operations.
Amazon preparing to automate 75% of work
The New York Times report, citing internal documents, said that Amazon’s robotics team is working on automating 75 percent of the company’s tasks, which will eliminate the need to hire 1,60,000 American employees by 2027. This automation will benefit Amazon approximately $12.6 billion over the two years between 2025 and 2027. Amazon is using words like ‘advanced technology’ and ‘cobot’ instead of words like AI and automation to describe the deployment of robotics. Internal company documents also show that Amazon already has plans in place to deal with criticism and opposition to automation.
However, Amazon sources say the documents claimed to have been discovered by The New York Times are incomplete. An Amazon spokesperson also did not confirm the terms in which it is being said that the company uses them for robotics.
