New Delhi: Mohammed Ahmed, an Indian resident, travelled from Telangana to Russia in April 2025, intending to find employment in the construction sector. After reaching Russia, Ahmed was trapped in the middle of the Russia-Ukraine war and was reportedly forced to be on the front line to fight, as he was defrauded by his job agent within weeks of his arrival.
Ahmed’s wife, Afsha Begum, a Hyderabad resident, now appealed to the Foreign Ministry to help her husband get out of Russia, as he was forced to participate in combat training to be on the front line in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Afsha wrote a letter to the Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and accused a Mumbai-based consultancy firm, which offered a job in Russia to her husband.
She also confirmed that Ahmed left India in April 2025 and was out of work for nearly a month, was forcibly shifted to a remote area, and was given weapons training.
After training, 26 persons were taken to the border area to fight the Ukrainian Army. While being taken to the border area, Ahmed jumped from the army vehicle, due to which he suffered a fracture in his right leg. He refused to fight. But he is being threatened to either fight against the Ukrainian Army or get killed,” Afsha Begum stated.
Ahmed’s wife urged the government to help her husband return to India, as he is the sole earner in his family, including his paralysed mother, wife, and two children aged 10 and four.
Ahmed recorded a video by himself and stated that 25 men were training with him, and as of now, 17 have been killed, including an Indian.
“The place where I am is a border, and war is going on. We four Indians refused to go (into the warzone). They threatened us to fight and pointed a weapon at me and another person… They placed a gun to my neck and said that they would shoot me and stage it as if I was killed by a drone,” Ahmed said in his self-recorded video.

I have a plaster on my leg and am unable to walk. Please do not spare the agent who sent me here (Russia). He got me entangled in all this. He made me sit here for 25 days without work. I kept asking for work, but in vain. I was forcefully dragged into this in the guise of employment in Russia,” he added.

In response, a counsellor at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, Tadu Mamu, confirmed that Ahmed’s details have been shared and requested that Russian authorities release him as early as possible from the Russian army.
The official also stated that all Indian nationals’ cases in the Russian army have been followed by the embassy as a top priority.
In September, India seeks to release 27 Indian nationals who were recruited to the Russian army. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the officials are in close touch with those trapped Indian families.
