Son Heung-min poised for record breaking move to MLS club LAFC

New Delhi: After a decade long of brilliance in North London, Son Heung-min is closing the chapter on his career at Tottenham Hotspur. the 33-year-old con firmed over the weekend that he will be leaving the club this summer with Major League Soccer’s club Los Angeles FC now set to become his next destination.

Son made the announcement during a press conference on Saturday, sharing out with everyone that he is set to bring an end to his ten-year long Spurs career. The Spurs captain could even receive a record fee, potentially surpassing the £22.5m paid by Atlanta United to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.

Although final details are still being ironed out, sources close to the deal believe it’s just a matter of paperwork and the medical before Son is unveiled in Los Angeles. He still has a contract with Tottenham running until 2026 but both parties appear to have agreed on a move.

His farewell appearance came on Sunday during a 1-1 friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul which was a fitting venue for one of South Korea’s biggest sporting icons. Son was substituted in the 65th minute and given a guard of honour by both sets of players. The emotion on the pitch reflected the impact he holds on the club and his teammates.

End of an era at Spurs

Son joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to become one of the club’s most successful player. In 454 appearances he netted 173 goals and created countless memories for fans at White Hart Lane and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He captained the Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final this May. With Spurs now heading to Germany for a friendly against Bayern Munich and a reunion with former teammate Harry Kane, Son is expected to take some time off in South Korea before finalising his move.

Son left the pitch in tears and after the final game he spoke about how he will look back to his time with the club over a decade. In a video shared by Spurs on their social media handle Son said, “It is a beautiful moment, and the most perfect moment. I think this is something that I will never forget, and will always appreciate. The gaffer understood my situation, listened to me and asked me what I wanted, and for that I am very grateful. The players in the team made me a better person, I am a very lucky guy to have such amazing players with me, and I wish them all the best.”
