Yemen: The chances of Nimisha Priya’s redemption have been further reduced after Abdul Fattah Mahdi, brother of Talal Mahdi, reiterated the demand for her execution. He held Nimisha directly responsible for his brother’s death.
The family’s letter to the Attorney General of Yemen strongly refused to accept any negotiation or pardon. It stated, “We categorically reject all attempts at reconciliation.” The family also cited that no new date of prosecution has been announced, even though half a month has passed since the postponement.
“We affirm our full adherence to our legitimate right to implement the retaliation sentence. We categorically reject all attempts at reconciliation,” the letter by Abdul Mahdi stated.
Nimisha Priaya is a native of Palakkad, Kerala. She was convicted by the Yemeni court in 2020 of killing her business partner, Talal and concealing his body in a water tank. After continuous mediation efforts of Indian religious leaders with Yemeni scholars, her execution was delayed.
The supporters of Nimisha in India have been raising money to pay ‘diya’ (blood money) to seek reconciliation through legal channels. However, Talal’s brother and his family have been adamant about her execution, denying any negotiation.
