In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Renuka Singh defeated Congress’s Khelsai Singh by 1,57,873 votes. Renuka Singh got 663,711 lakh or 52 percent votes while Khelsai got 505,838 lakh or 40 percent votes. At the same time, Asha Devi Poya of Gondwana Gantantra Party was at the third position. Asha Devi got 24,463 thousand votes.

2014 Lok Sabha election result

In 2014, BJP’s Kamalbhan Singh Marabi had won the election from here. He defeated Congress’s Ramdev Tirkey by 1,47,236 lakh votes. Kamalbhan Singh Marabi got 585,336 lakh votes while Ramdev Tirkey got 438,100 lakh votes. At the same time, Dharamjit Singh Markam of Bahujan Samajwadi Party was at third position. Dharamjeet got 21,633 thousand votes.

After Surguja Lok Sabha seat came into existence in 1952, Congress held the seat for a few years. From 1952 to 1971, Congress won the Surguja Lok Sabha seat continuously. In 1977, he was elected MP from Janata Party. After this, sometimes Congress and sometimes BJP kept winning from this seat. BJP is in possession of this seat since 2004.

Surguja has a very ancient history. It is believed that Lord Ram, along with Mother Sita and brother Lakshman, spent some days of exile here. It is also said that the great poet Kalidas had composed his famous epic ‘Meghdut’ on the land of Surguja. At the same time, Surguja has also been ruled by kings and emperors. Before the arrival of the Maurya dynasty, this area was in the kingdom of Nanda dynasty.

In 1882, Maharaja Raghunath Sharan Singh Dev took control of Surguja state. There is an ancient temple of Mahamaya Devi in ​​Surguja. The torso of Mahamaya Devi is situated in the Mahamaya Temple while her head is in the Mahamaya Temple of Ratanpur in Bilaspur. This temple was built by Maharaja Bahadur Raghunath Sharan Singh Dev.
