Iran US Agreement 2026: While hopes are being expressed at the international level regarding the proposed peace agreement between Iran and America, this issue now seems to be taking the form of a serious political dispute within Iran. After a recent TV interview of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the country’s fundamentalist groups have started openly protesting. The situation has become such that in many cities demands for his resignation have started being raised.

Dozens of protesters protested outside the local office of the Foreign Ministry in the north-eastern Iranian city of Mashhad. The protesters raised slogans against Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, accusing him of compromising national interests. Videos published in local media showed women wearing black chadors and other protesters carrying red and black flags. The crowd continuously raised slogans like “Araghchi resign” and “Down with the insulter Araghchi”.

Why do fundamentalist groups object to the agreement?
Iran’s radical political factions allege that the current terms of the proposed agreement with the US could harm the country’s strategic interests. They believe that this agreement may weaken Iran’s influence on the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important maritime trade routes in the world. A large part of the global energy supply is transported through this route. In such a situation, Iran has been considering it as its strategic strength for a long time.

A whole controversy erupted from an interview
In an interview with state-run television, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposed agreement included a provision for lifting the US naval blockade. This blockade was imposed by America at a time when Iran took some controversial steps in the Strait of Hormuz. During the interview, Araghchi also said that in the future “the administration of the Strait of Hormuz will not be the same as before.” Although he claimed to protect national interests by calling it a part of Iran’s deterrence strategy, his statement gave an opportunity to political opponents to attack the government.
News of protest in Tehran also
In some videos going viral on social media, it has been claimed that protests will also take place outside the Foreign Ministry headquarters in the capital Tehran. However, these videos could not be independently verified. In these alleged demonstrations, protesters were seen raising slogans not only against Araghchi but also against Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Ghalibaf is playing a key role in this negotiation process and is considered a supporter of the agreement.
Different claims on the deadline of the agreement
Meanwhile, there is confusion regarding the possible deadline for finalizing the agreement. US President Donald Trump and some Pakistani officials have claimed that the agreement can be finalized soon and preparations are underway for an electronic signing ceremony. However, the Iranian leadership seems to be more cautious in this matter and no fixed date has been confirmed at the official level.
What did the Iranian Foreign Ministry say?
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghai rejected the possibility of an immediate agreement, saying the process was not yet complete and “it will not happen tomorrow.” However, he definitely indicated that the negotiations have reached the final stage and some important announcement regarding the agreement may come in the coming days.
