Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has supported the Rajasthan Royals opener and claimed that he should play in all three formats. This is not Vaibhav Suryavanshi, but his senior Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Jaiswal is currently a regular only in Test cricket, whereas he has been with the ODI team for a long time, but has got very few opportunities. At this time everyone is praising Vaibhav Suryavanshi, but Sehwag has called Yashasvi as the right successor of Rohit Sharma as an opener.
The problem with Yashasvi at the moment is that he opens with KL Rahul in Tests, but in ODI the openers are Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, whereas in T20 the pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma is famous. In this way, Yashasvi has been seen only as a backup opener. He has played 23 T20 Internationals and four ODIs, but in the same situation when there was no Rohit or Gill in ODIs or Samson or Abhishek in T20s. Jaiswal has scored 171 runs in the four ODI matches played so far, which includes an inning of 116 runs.
“There is no place right now. Shubman Gill is the captain (in ODI). Rohit Sharma is playing. As soon as Rohit Sharma retires, you will see Jaiswal playing in white-ball and ODI cricket as well. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad can be his competitor, but if you take three openers, you will definitely see Jaiswal among them,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz during the India vs Afghanistan match.
Sehwag further said, “Look, he came into the ODI team only because someone like Gill or Sharma was not available. It was not that he got a chance and then he did not perform. When he got a chance, he performed very well. It was not that he was dropped after not performing well. He was in the team because no one was playing.”
Ishaan Kishan is also a contender
The former opener also feels that Ishan Kishan is also a contender for the opener. He explained, “Ishan Kishan is also not a part of ODI cricket. He has scored the fastest double century in ODIs. So he is also a player who is to be expected, but I would definitely like to see Jaiswal in ODI cricket and T20I cricket – I mean all three formats. He is a player who can play all three formats.”
