Former cricketer Virender Sehwag has described Yashasvi Jaiswal as a player of all three formats. According to him, after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal will become the permanent opener in white-ball cricket. At present, due to tough competition in openings, he is getting less opportunities.
New Delhi: India’s former explosive opener Virender Sehwag has praised young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal. Sehwag believes that Yashasvi should play in all three formats of cricket. Yashasvi is an important part of the team in Test cricket, but his place in limited overs cricket has not been confirmed yet. Sehwag said that Yashasvi has the ability to play in all three formats. Currently, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are opening in ODI, while in T20, players like Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are opening the innings for India.
Sehwag said that due to tough competition in the opening, Jaiswal is getting less chances. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said, “It is true that there is no place in the team right now. Shubman Gill is the captain, Rohit Sharma is also playing. But when Rohit Sharma retires, you will see Jaiswal become a permanent player in white-ball cricket and ODIs. It is possible that Rituraj Gaikwad may become a challenge for Jaiswal. But if you choose three openers, Jaiswal’s name will definitely be there among them.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has performed well whenever he has got opportunities in ODIs. He has scored 171 runs at an average of 57 in the 4 ODI matches played so far. This also includes a century (116*). Sehwag further said, “Jaiswal got opportunities in ODIs only when Rohit or Gill were not playing. He performed brilliantly then. He was not removed from the team due to poor performance, but when other players came back, he had to make room for him.
Sehwag also reminded that Ishan Kishan, who scored the fastest double century in ODI, is also out of the team at present. He said that both Kishan and Jaiswal deserve a place in the team.
