Sales of Apple’s thinnest ‘iPhone Air’ are less than expected. Due to weak demand, the company is reducing its production by about 10 lakh units. Due to the high price, customers are buying iPhone 17 or Pro models with better features.
California: American tech giant Apple’s thinnest iPhone till date, ‘iPhone Air’ was launched last September. But according to new reports, the company is not happy with the sales of iPhone Air. Due to weak sales, Apple has started reducing the production of iPhone Air. The Elec, citing Japan’s Mizuho Securities, has reported that Apple may reduce the production of iPhone Air by about 1 million units this year due to lower than expected demand.
Design hit, phone flop
When Apple introduced the iPhone Air, it made a lot of headlines around the world. It was the thinnest iPhone ever, measuring just 5.6 mm thick. Its features included a 6.5-inch ProMotion 120Hz Super Retina XDR display, A19 Pro chip, 48 MP single rear camera with 2x telephoto support, 18 MP selfie camera, and up to 40 hours of video playback. The starting price of its 256 GB base storage variant was Rs 1,19,900. But, despite such a slim design and flagship level features, the iPhone Air is not selling well. That is why there is news that Apple is planning to reduce the production of iPhone Air by one million units.
People are leaving iPhone Air and going towards Pro model
At the same time, there were reports of iPhone Air being sold out as soon as it was launched in China. But, despite the great design, the iPhone Air received a lukewarm response in western markets. Experts say that its high price reduced people’s interest. According to reports, customers are either choosing iPhone 17 for the price of iPhone Air or buying iPhone 17 Pro model due to its better camera system and premium features.
Why did the demand for iPhone Air decrease?
Apple is also planning to increase production of other smartphones in the iPhone 17 series such as iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. By early 2026, total production of the iPhone 17 lineup is targeted to increase from 88 million to 94 million units. This shows that the new iPhone series has performed well overall. Thin smartphones are getting mixed response in the market these days. Their thin designs often result in small battery sizes and weak camera features. Therefore, according to reports, many users stay away from such smartphones.
